The Pharmaceutical Industry: A Business Opportunity for Spas?

 

In previous posts, we have written about the current strain of national healthcare systems around the world, and the development of a synergy between spas and hospitals. This time, we are focusing on a new synergy that our industry can forge with another important player of the health field: The pharmaceutical industry.

This post explores the current scenario of the pharmaceutical industry and the approach this field is taking to deal with the challenges they are facing, which could ultimately create a new and interesting business opportunity for the spa industry. We firmly believe, all actors involved in health and wellbeing now need to see what they can do and offer in order to increase the quality of life of their consumers.

En esta ocasión, nos enfocaremos en una nueva sinergia que nuestro sector puede desarrollar con otro protagonista importante dentro del campo de la salud: La industria farmacéutica.

Este artículo explora el escenario actual de la industria farmacéutica y el enfoque que dicho campo está adoptando para hacer frente a los retos que enfrenta y que en últimas podría terminar creando una oportunidad de negocios nueva e interesante para la industria del spa. Creemos firmemente que todos los actores involucrados en la salud y el bienestar de hoy en día necesitan ver lo que pueden hacer y ofrecer con el fin de aumentar la calidad de vida de sus consumidores.

 

The Crisis of The Pharmaceutical Industry

Just like hospitals, the pharmaceutical industry is also facing its own crisis. According to ‘Fight or Flight,’ a recent survey elaborated by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, “65% of the companies surveyed believe that the pharmaceutical industry is facing a strategic crisis”. Stephan Danner, a pharmaceutical expert, states that this crisis is the result of “public cost containment measures, difficult market access as well as massive patent expiries”.

Although the overall performance of the pharmaceutical industry is still strong, the 2011 CMR International Pharmaceutical R&D Factbook highlights a significant decrease in the production of new drugs. Along those lines, the ‘Fight or Flight’ report states that over US$ 400 billion of market capitalisation has been “lost over the past 10 years among innovative pharma companies”.

In addition to this, big pharmaceutical companies still rely heavily on revenue generated by well established products, a serious risk considering that “over the next three years (2012-2014) more than 110 products will lose patent exclusivity in the US’’. In other words, this means that “more than half of the industry’s sales going off-patent” within this period of time. The financial crisis and pressures on lower drug prices are also creating additional problems for the industry’s overall performance.

 

Focusing on Diversification

In this context, diversification has recently gained popularity within the pharmaceutical industry as an effective strategy to deal with the current crisis. According to the ‘Fight or Flight’ survey, “67% of pharma executives see diversification as a potential way forward”. Considering the lost market capitalisation we mentioned above, for the first time in history the financial community supports a strategy based on diversification for the pharmaceutical industry.

The Roland Berger study identifies three dimensions of diversification: the de-risk path, the innovation path and the integration path. At the moment, the conservative de-risk path seems to be the favourite one among pharma companies. Along those lines, “78% of executives perceive generics to be the most important area of diversification followed by consumer health (50%) and vaccines (42%)”.

 

A Business Opportunity for The Spa Industry

As we have discussed, there is an imminent crisis affecting the pharmaceutical industry today. In spite of this, this field is already facing this crisis with a new strategy based on diversification. As stated by Wayne Schnarr, a healthcare consultant, in a previous post on the Cross-Border Bio Tech Blog, “Expansion and diversification could also involve other types of drug products and healthcare activities”. The ‘Fight or Flight’ also states that in order to create value from diversification, pharmaceutical companies must leverage existing capabilities and forge new synergies.

It is precisely from this new approach in the pharmaceutical field that the spa industry can develop a new business opportunity. A good step forward would be for spas, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies to join forces as all industries need to innovate and change their business strategies.

 

La crisis de la industria farmacéutica

Al igual que los hospitales, la industria farmacéutica también se enfrenta a su propia crisis. De acuerdo con ‘Fight or Flight’, un estudio elaborado recientemente por Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, “el 65% de las empresas encuestadas creen que la industria farmacéutica se enfrenta a una crisis estratégica”. Stephan Danner, un experto en farmacéutica, afirma que esta crisis es el resultado de “medidas de contención del gasto público, un acceso difícil al mercado y vencimientos masivos de patentes”.

Aunque el rendimiento global de la industria farmacéutica sigue siendo fuerte, el reporte 2011 CMR International Pharmaceutical R&D Factbook pone de manifiesto una disminución significativa en la producción de nuevos medicamentos. A este respecto, el estudio ‘Fight or Flight’ señala que más de US$400 billones en capitalización de mercado se han “perdido en los últimos 10 años entre las empresas farmacéuticas innovadoras”.

Además de esto, las grandes compañías farmacéuticas siguen dependiendo en gran medida de los ingresos generados por productos bien establecidos, un riesgo grave si se considera que “en los próximos tres años (2012-2014) más de 110 productos perderán la exclusividad de patentes en los Estados Unidos”. En otras palabras, esto significa que “más de la mitad de las ventas de la industria perderá su patente” dentro de este periodo de tiempo. La crisis financiera y las presiones para establecer precios más bajos para los medicamentos también están creando problemas adicionales en el rendimiento global de la industria.

 

Centrándose en la diversificación

En este contexto, la diversificación ha ganado recientemente popularidad dentro de la industria farmacéutica como una estrategia eficaz para hacer frente a la crisis actual. De acuerdo con ‘Fight or Flight’, “el 67% de los ejecutivos farmacéuticos consideran la diversificación como opción potencial hacia el futuro “. Teniendo en cuenta la pérdida de capitalización de mercado que mencionamos antes, por primera vez en la historia la comunidad financiera está a favor de una estrategia para la industria farmacéutica basada en la diversificación.

El estudio de Roland Berger identifica tres dimensiones de la diversificación: la opción de reducción del riesgo, la opción de la innovación y la opción de la integración. Por el momento, la conservadora opción de reducción del riesgo parece ser la alternativa favorita entre las compañías farmacéuticas. En ese sentido, “el 78% de los ejecutivos ven en los medicamentos genéricos el área más importante de diversificación seguida por la salud del consumidor (50%) y las vacunas (42%)”.

 

Una oportunidad de negocio para el sector del spa

Como ya hemos comentado, hay una crisis inminente que afecta a la industria farmacéutica de hoy en día. A pesar de ello, este campo ya se enfrenta a esta crisis con una nueva estrategia basada en la diversificación. Tal y como lo ha señalado el consultor de salud Wayne Schnarr en un artículo publicado en el blog Cross-Border Bio Tech Blog, “la expansión y la diversificación también podrían incluir otros tipos de productos farmacéuticos y actividades de salud”. El estudio ‘Fight or Flight’ indica, además, que las empresas farmacéuticas deben reforzar las capacidades existentes y forjar nuevas sinergias si quieren generar valor sobre la diversificación.

Es precisamente a partir de este nuevo enfoque en el campo farmacéutico que la industria del spa puede desarrollar una nueva oportunidad de negocios. Un buen paso hacia adelante sería que los spas, hospitales y compañías farmacéuticas pudieran unir sus fuerzas ya que todas estas industrias necesitan innovar y cambiar sus estrategias de negocio.
