In March 2014, the Singapore government launched the One Million KG Challenge , a national incentive-based weight management programme aimed to motivate and support Singapore residents between the ages of 18 and 64 who meet certain criteria to achieve and manage a healthy body weight, and as a nation lose one million kilogrammes by 2016.

Under the tagline “healthy living is rewarding”, exciting prizes (such as cars, vacation packages to exotic destinations, and many more) are on offer to encourage the population to choose a healthier lifestyle. Moreover, the process has been made easy – residents just need to “engage” by tapping into the wellness resource library, “monitor” their overall health status, “weigh in” at the wellness kiosks located throughout Singapore, and “achieve” their weight loss target.
Over the past decade, nations have spent billions of dollars treating obesity and obesity-related conditions. In 2005, the US alone spent $190 billion on obesity-related healthcare expenses; a sum that by far exceeds the value of the million prizes Singapore is rewarding its population. If instead of incurring exorbitant costs in treating these conditions, countries embraced a nationwide healthy living campaign, like Singapore’s One Million KG Challenge with its enticing incentives, the positive impact of having a healthier population on both economic productivity and long-term healthcare costs would be substantial.
Many countries have implemented initiatives to raise awareness on health and wellness – the US’s Health Matters Initiative is just one example of many. However, Singapore’s incentive-based system is definitely a smart way of encouraging the choice of a healthier lifestyle nationwide.
